18th May Presentation Studies

On Thursday 18th May we were given a workshop task to plan and prepare for our last stage and criteria for the project which was “Presentation”. To achieve the criteria I must be considering strategies to present a self-directed art and design project to a high standard. I am presenting a self –directed project to a specified audience to a high standard. The task has allowed me to prepare for this aspect and follow the target audience I am aiming to achieve. Previously I have identified the target audience through my artist statement and A3 development sheet preparing for the gallery exhibition. For the target audience, I am wanting to aim the piece towards the visitors exploring the exhibition from the local community. The topic of “Local Community” has been specifically identified through the target audience because my subject matter and piece has been influenced by the topic of local industry. The coal-mining industry is an emotional subject as it effected the wide spectrum of community lives, miners and families. Through my tapestry work I wanted to capture the community lives within a positive way to give the sense of remembrance and the continuing support in the present time. As the tapestry banner captures the communities’ attention and gives the sense of reassurance I wanted my piece to reflect this when displayed within the gallery environment. I am aiming the community who were involved in the strike to gain memories from the period of time and see the banner in a positive aspect through the fight of the community spirit and supporting others. Also, the target audience of the community will read the piece as a sense of an emotional perspective as it is a loss of industry within the environment which destroyed the loss of industry lives and the working class society. I am wanting this specific target audience to gain the sense of pride as the working industry has been transformed into a piece of artwork through the present perspective. Within the gallery space I am wanting the piece to be displayed high to symbolise the striking banners and the sense of reassurance that the community are wanting to see to give the impression that the support is still generated today. I am wanting to show my respects to the visitors and also reinforce my opinion of the project in which I have achieved and learned. My support for the working industry will always be presented within a respected way and will also my feeling of being proud of my family and working class background. Also for my target audience I am aiming the piece to be captured through students visiting the gallery from College. I am preparing for the piece to capture this specific audience because I want the piece to be educational and to inspire others to learn about the local industry in which I achieved through the project aspect. As I gained the sense of pride and the support for the mining community I am wanting to reflect this aspect further to inform others to join together. Through difficult times within the present and modern society, it will inform our generation in which the community faced in the past that relates to struggles faced today. It will reinforce the idea I felt through respect and demonstrating the fight in which the miners and working community felt to achieve the aim of protecting our working society. It strives the determination and the theme of fighting for what you believe and what you want to save. The banner displayed is also aimed at the target audience to show a striking piece with the tones of colours and fabric used. I am wanting to inform the next generation and capture the sense of support within the college environment. Both target audiences have allowed me to plan and prepare my work to suit the requirements within the gallery and space required. To capture my understanding of the target audience piece generated, I have produced a visual mind map and mood board to express and generate ideas for the presentation. It has given me a better understanding of the subject matter and instead of writing about the audience, imagery was used to describe both elements effectively. I was pleased with the outcome of the design because it has gave me a better understanding of audiences personality and what they are wanting to see when visiting the college exhibition. This aspect of the target audience has been previously explored in past project and has been adapted to suit my style and project theme well.

To complete the gallery workshop task, I was given an outline of the design boards in which the design will be the space I will be given for the exhibition. Also with the sheet I was given a map in which the space availability was captured and measured well. To prepare for the presentation I was given the exhibition space near the entrance and exit of the gallery space to highlight the subject matter of my banner standing out within the community. As previously explored the banner will be suspended with two poles across a 1m industrial calico piece. Initially wanted to place a marching crowd behind the background of the piece to produce a landscape display and installation piece. However, when gaining feedback and experimenting with the chosen images displayed within my sheet I was unable to capture this as the layout and design would become blurred and demonstrate a pixel outcome. To resolve the situation I went back to my design board sheet and produced another design layout. With my piece being captured within the foreground I am aiming for the piece to have my visual sheet designs placed within the background of the surface. As I have gained that the boards can hold 4 A3 horizontal sheets this worked in my favour as I could capture all of the visual sheets generated throughout the project. The visual sheets are going to be displayed as it captures my progression to Leeds College Of Art to specialise within surface design and printed Textiles. Also for my gallery space I am wanting to place my sketchbook into the design which will be attached through a rack to maintain and accurate outcome. Finally for the gallery space, I am aiming to have a plinth to place all of my business cards onto the surface of the design for the audience to collect and gain self-promotion. The designs have been drawn and completed in my technical file.

The conclusion of the target audience will be through these words “Barnsley is an industrial town which we will never forget and always be respected”.
