4th April Samples and Experimentation

Also on Tuesday 4th April, I continued to generate and experiment with samples progressing towards my final outcome of the project. The pieces created maintained my final outlook of the design but includes the experimentation of techniques, processes, colour schemes and materials. The outcome of the project is to produce a tapestry piece which will be placed on banner and displayed as an inspired workers union outlook but also a campaign piece. The repeated screen will continue to allow me to produce several outcomes of the layout and will also allow me to problem solve and identify areas I need to improve on within the design outcome. In the workshop task I specifically created small samples to identify each element of the design and areas to improve more accurately within the layout. Also, it has allowed me to produce a large scale sample of works which are going to be analysed throughout my blog work and technical file of the project. I focused on creating screen-samples as I wanted to identify if the piece was accurate and each individual layers are suitable for the task. With the exposed screens previously not achieving well, I wanted to ensure that the layers were accurate and could experiment well towards my final outlook of the project. I have analysed my progress and methods of the task and within the blog entry I have identified the outcomes of my layouts and materials I have used. The task has allowed me to use practical methods and skills within the project and Textiles studio. It has allowed me to work independently and adapt my skills in order to create layers and final outlooks of the project. I have adapted skills knowledge and understanding from previous projects to be developed into my own work and outcome. It has allowed me to problem solve and identify areas of improvement. The workshop has allowed me to plan, organise and prepare efficiently to produce samples in the time given. Finally, the task has allowed me to evaluate and reflect on the samples generated within the task which are going to be developed further and adapt my outlook of the project.

This piece has been printed on cotton and includes all four layers of the design. The piece incorporates the colour scheme of black, orange and yellow which have been inspired from research take from the miners strike and developed within my colour scheme. The outline represents the union flag which has been developed through the works of Tracey Emin and Grayson Perry which highlights the unity of the nation behind the miner. This specific piece highlights a miner’s landscape obtained through my visit to the National Coal-mining museum and has allowed me to analyse a specific area. To capture this piece I used news-print to cover previous designs within the surface to avoid other designs being on display and contact within the surface. A problem I faced with this outcome was that I was unable to see within the layout the layers as they were light colours which caused damaged to the background of the design. This included the orange and yellow layers combining together compared to being separate within the design. As the black layer was placed it damaged the overall layout as the screen moved causing the design to be layered and printed twice within the surface. I wasn’t pleased with the outcome of the design as you were unable to read it which caused damage to the outlook. To solve the problem next time I will be placing weights onto the design to stop the piece from moving. Also, to solve the problem I will use tracing paper to guide my layers accurately onto the surface of the design and improve the appearance. However, the colour scheme worked well as they complement each other and the black layout emphasised the bold message and lettering on display. The colours yellow and orange were harmonious and worked well within the surface. The material cotton also worked effectively as the design transferred well which made me feel confident with the layers being placed onto the surface.

Outcome of  Layer

The sample below has been developed with the same colour scheme and material cotton used previously. I wanted to develop my confidence and improve the layout which didn’t work effectively through the surface of the design. I also continued to use the same colour scheme as I believed that it worked effectively within the surface of the design and complimented each other effectively. Also, I felt the scheme highlighted my development and understanding well. The sample continued to use all layers of the design and continued to use the repeated screen technique effectively. The black layout worked well in this experimentation as It captured the intricate details of the landscape and did not damage the design. However, a problem I faced with yellow and orange colour was that I was unable to create accurate outline causing the harmonious colours to blend and become inaccurate on the surface of the design. This was a reoccurring problem with the colour scheme being unable to be seen through the layers of screens. I will be taking information from this and considering my choice of colour scheme as they didn’t work well with the smaller samples causing the damage of the design outcome.

Outcome of the piece

This sample continues to use the same colour scheme of black, orange and yellow but explores a different aspect of my design. I decided to continue to experiment with this colour scheme as I wanted to see if it effected other design layouts and the impact of all layers chosen. I continued to use the material cotton as it was working well with small samples to achieve layered outcomes effectively. Also, I decided to use this material as I could experiment with a range of colour schemes well within the surface of the design. The outcome of the piece was successful as the black layer emphasised intricate features of objects down the mine and characteristics of the horse. This layer also separated the harmonious colours of yellow and orange well which I was pleased about as wouldn’t allow the colours to blend. However, both colour layouts were successful before the layer of black as they were placed effectively onto the surface with accurate measurements. I was pleased with this outcome as it captured my design well and displayed my emphasis of the colour scheme.

Orange And Yellow Combined

Final Outcome

This large scale sample combines the design layout together but with separate 4 individual cotton pieces. The layout explores the colour scheme of silver, black and red which has been taken and developed from industrial research, buildings, strike campaigns and specifically the event at happened at Orgreave. I wanted to use these colours to display a sense of sadness and how the community has been destroyed by the closure of pits. The monotone colours also emphasise the colour red and areas within the piece effectively. The silver colour was a challenge to create and I faced problems when capturing it. The problem I faced with the colour was that I was unable to achieve and accurate piece as the black dye was hard to capture from the bottle. Then this lead the binder to create a spiral effect within the substance causing different shades and tones. However, this didn’t affect the outcome but to solve the problem next time I will be using a different dye to capture an accurate result. I was pleased with the outcome of the design, as the layout identified some areas that have been damaged when exposed through the machine. However, I discovered that this worked well to my outcome as it symbolised blood on the surface which relates back to the event occurred at Orgreave. This mistake on the layer has allowed me to problem solve and create a piece which is more relatable to my project outlook and outcome. I am pleased that I have experimented with this scheme and I am going to develop this pattern further as I believe it worked well within the surface of the design combined together. However the colour scheme will need to be considered when placed at the exhibition as the tapestry may be displayed behind old photograph of a miners march which will not be effective as the piece won’t stand out. I will need to take this into consideration as the piece needs to be striking and be engaging when displayed as a banner.

Final Outcome
Silver and Red Layer
Within the workshop, I also started to generate further samples which were going to be developed next day in the studio workshop task and Textiles. I planned my time efficiently and generated background layered samples to be dried and ready to be used for next day. I am going to generate samples using the colour scheme red, blue black and white as it symbolises the Union Jack colours and the emphasis and unity of the community. I was pleased with the outcome of the background layers and they are presented below.

Outcome of the piece
Through the workshop I faced problem with binder colours and dyes. The colour of yellow was damaged in the substance as the colour green appeared when placing the colour onto the surface. To solve the problem, I developed my own dye and used the technique that I have used previously within the Textiles studio. This allowed me to gain independence within the studio to create my own colours and dyes. Gloves were worn throughout the task to avoid contact with hands the substance. Aprons were worn throughout the task to avoid staining. Finally, the workspace was cleared at the end of each colour used and the task to avoid damaging others work and the table layout. Health and safety was maintained throughout the workshop task.
Images below show my progress and the method screen-printing to create my samples using my exposed screens. The workshop task was successful as it has allowed me to produce a range of sample exploring colour, material and layer. It has allowed me to problem solve and identify which colours are most effective and what I am going to improve and develop further. The list of dyes and materials used have been placed in my technical file .
