Business Card Evaluation

Within the creative business card task we analysed professional business cards which have been previously created through past students and current artists displaying work within galleries and exhibitions. The task generated elements and areas for improvement which we identified individually but also as a group. Also the task allowed us to identify positive business cards in which we can take inspiration from to develop the pieces into our own work and to create professional outcomes. The task has allowed me to identify how business cards have been developed through projects and placed onto designs to highlight themes and current work which is demonstrating the best outcomes throughout the two years of completing the course. It has allowed also to identify each individual career pathway that the students have achieve and specifically analyse the works of Textiles students to relate to my work and current project of surface pattern designing. The task demonstrates the quality in which they have been printed and what we need to consider when producing them. As we have previously created business cards in Photoshop they have become less useful as they don't demonstrate current work in which we have to consider when creating them. This is an area of problem solving I need to consider when producing the final outcome as I am less confident with using the software programs when taught in the studio previously. Also when producing my outcome I will need to consider print outcomes and finishes as some of the business cards I have analysed have glossy finishes, Matt finishes and embossed finishes. Also the cards show less effective finishes including a print finish, laminate cover and spray mount finish. To achieve a high standard I need to consider this outcome and also the production of the works. As 50 business cards need to be produced this can be cost effective through reprographics, printing them manually or ordering them online. Through reprographics and ordering them online I am insurance to be having them produced to a high standard with accurate measurements which I have gained previously in the workshop task (3.5 inch X 2 inch) compared to printing them off manually. When creating business cards I need to consider details which will be placed onto them in order to promote my work professionally but also to avoid discrimination. Information I need to be placed onto the design include:

Full Name

Job Description

Email Address

Professional Mobile Number

Website

Social Media

Examples of work

Examples of work is an area I am wanting to include the most as the professional and high quality designs have included full scale samples and photographs and details within the background of the design. This outlook is very inspirational and I am going to consider this when developing designs further as they emphasise the importance of promoting work within industry as art students. Also, the web address is important for me personally as it allows me to express my current work and outcomes through my blog address which also demonstrates my analysis and the skills I have achieve throughout my project and course. Finally a professional email address will be considered throughout the task as it gives an effective way to contact clients compared to mobile phones. The email address also should be a professional name and relate to my business which will be placed onto my card for further information. These 3 elements taken from my analysis will be placed onto my business card and developed further into my final layout and outcome of the project. Also through my development I will be taken other elements into consideration when analysing and evaluating the business cards below and I will also not be placing the information below which includes:

Age

Gender

Home Address

Relationship Status

Personal Mobile Number

These elements above will not be considered when completing my final outlook of the business card as they are discriminated by particular clients which can effect business and sales. As I am an art student my work can specifically be discriminated through age as some clients can believe I am too young and not qualified and not experienced enough to complete designs. These elements have been take into consideration when completing the task within the workshop and I have identified requirements and areas I am going to include to create a high standard business card. I must produce and include:

 Name

 Job status

 Photographs of work

 Email

Blog Address

Standard Business Cards (3.5inch X 2inch)

50 high standard cards with quality finish

Professional standard with equal and maintained sizes throughout

The theme of "Industry" and Final Major Project must be displayed in the outcome of my Business Cards.

The task has allowed me to problem solve within the professional business card task to highlight areas I will need to consider when creating the outcomes and what I need to achieve to aim for a high standard finish. Also the task has allowed me to analyse past students business cards and compare them to artists work within galleries to see how they have been developed and progressed through the research and skills gained. Finally the task has allowed me to gain further research into the subject and allow me to identify what I need to complete for the project and the amount I need to produce. Here are business cards in which I have analysed within the task and taken inspiration from to include within my work and to improve the original ideas created in the Photoshop task.

This is a business card exploring the career pathway of Textiles which relates to my career pathway and progress. The image shows a patchwork piece with a series of sequins and buttons. These images are not the persons work through being told in the workshop task which makes it less effective and doesn't promote to the client the studies and skills she can create. As the cards have been printed at college it has been damaged through the cutting process which has effected the overall appearance and display of the works. It has also made the piece difficult to read and with the outline being cut above of the design. As the piece was cut in college the measurements are inaccurate and have cause damage to the spray mount outcome. The font is also less useful because the colour is not stand out within the foreground of the design causing it to blend with the chosen images displayed. The style of font is also less effective as it is difficult to read within the design outlook. Overall the piece is less effective and doesn't display a professional finish.

The background of the design is also less effective as it repeats the same font causing damage to the overall outlook of the design. The piece is useful as it connects and displays a sense of rhythm though both elements of the design. But due to the layout of text and font it is difficult to read through the surface of design causing a less effective layout. Through the design exploring Textiles it doesn't show the students project study or theme for her final major project which is a requirement when creating the designs.

This is a business card that explores the front side of the layout. The layout doesn't include information on the back which impacts the style and original surface design of a professional business card. As all of the information is placed at the front I believe the design is filled and looks unorganised when observed. The design looks unorganised with an irregular choice of colour, font and layout. The images give the impression that they have been taken from the internet which doesn't give a professional standard and doesn't promote the artist’s work well. However the background of the design is effective because the colours complement each other making the font and colours stand out within the design. The layout has been cut to a professional standard which can suggest it's been designed from a website but also reprographics standard. It has been cut professionally to a high standard with accurate measurements and the layout of the outcome has been influential.  Overall the piece gives an effective outlook with a high standard but the photographs and logo effected the appearance of the design.

This is a professional business card showing the simplistic side towards promoting work through an artist’s perspective. The monotone colours allow the piece to be repeated and manufactured well through promoting work. Also, the piece uses both sides of the card and demonstrates artwork and information behind the background of the design. The use of information and contact details is well with use of social media, contact details and websites. The piece doesn't give much information away which persuades the audience to read into the work and visit the social media website. The design has been embossed with a high quality finish which is inspirational through a professional standard. Also, the business card has been cut to a professional standard with accurate measurements. The individual piece and unique style of the work is inspirational because it demonstrates the personality of the artist’s work and what she creates. The contrasting colours and monotone tones make the piece simple but also engaging when observing the card.

This professional business cards explores the aspect of a Textiles Designer which has been created through a printer and spray mounted onto card. The piece is less effective as it has been cut through hand which has caused damaged towards the design outline. The design has been spray-mounted which has caused damaged when the outline has been cut and revealing the base layer of the design that is white card. This outlook has damaged the overall appearance causing a low quality finish and outcome when distributed. As the outcome has been generated through a printer it has caused damage to the design when transferred. The appearance has been blurred within the design causing the font to be effected and difficult to read when observing the piece. As the business card holds all the relevant information it still holds that difficulty of reading the design through the blurred fonts and outcomes. The choice of colour does not contribute towards the design outcome as it blends towards the background and doesn’t stand out through the outline. Through my personal perspective the design looks like the student’s original design which emphasises individuality and relates to the project brief and outcome. However as the design has been transferred through print it has caused the sense of loss towards the design through the layout becoming blurred and impacting the overall appearance. However, the sense of individual design makes the outcome and appearance more effective compared to other pieces observed.

This is a simple fine art student card which has been created by hand through the same printing process and spray mounted onto card. The layout is simple and uses a plain background to emphasise the foreground of the design. The font and image of the flower complement each other well through a traditional appearance and matching colours. However the piece doesn’t give much detail away through the layout and information through contacting the student. Only an email address is provided and doesn’t give enough information or links to promote the fine artist works. The outline has been cut through a professional standard and as the design has been placed onto white card with a white background it doesn’t cause any damage to the appearance.

The “Travelling With Photography” business card was very intriguing to observe as the front cover of the design presents a traditional landscape photograph with a hand placed within the middle of the design. The piece reflects a sense of questioning as from observing the image you want to discover the artwork in further detail and discover further information. This flows and transfers towards the background of the card with information around the student and areas to gain further insight towards the artwork and style presented. The background provides effective amount of contact details and social media promote to allow clients to receive further information. The font I believe is less effective as it can be difficult to read and contrasts with the professional appearance demonstrated on the front of the design. The outline has been cut to a professional standard and has matched the measurement and requirements generated from the project. It gives a good standard and quality finish when observing the card and provided an insight around the student in which you are wanting to gain further information.

This is a business card taken from a Graphic Design student from the final exhibition. Through the career pathway and perspective the piece is less effective as it doesn’t display the skills required, achieved and gained from studying the course. The piece doesn’t express any examples of designs and the sense of understanding through fonts, layouts and software program skills. The piece has been spray mounted onto card which presents a less effective outcome because it highlights damage towards the design and has caused an impact through the card base. However, the correct amount of information has been placed onto the design and the balance between social media and contact details have been presented well. However as a creative professional business card it doesn’t provide enough detail or highlights what the student can create and achieve. The choice of colour and font has worked well within the surface as the simple outcomes makes the piece engaging.

This business card is a professional artist who has a studio within the city of Sheffield. The piece has been taken from a gallery exhibition and provides an insight to print and design outcomes that he creates for clients and customers. The surface of the design has been mounted providing a textured surface which captures his style of work and outlines he works with. The colour scheme compliments the surface well and are harmonious within the piece. The balance between contact, information and creative perspectives have been displayed well which worked effectively to engage the audience. As it a professional artist, the balance of contact details is efficient with an address provided to meet the artist in person. The illustrations have been highlighted well within the surface and the choice of colour and font are engaging through the card. The outline of the card have been cut out well within the surface design with accurate measurements through production. This piece is very inspirational towards the project and contributes towards my development as I found the combination of illustration and information well.

This business card is a collage design created through surfaces and laminated card finishes. The piece has been layered with a laminate finish and combines a variety of materials and collage surfaces. The piece has been used with a range of materials which gives a less professional piece. As the outcome has been created through the computer it demonstrates a less effective finish and doesn’t display the skills achieved through software programs. The business present the impression that they have been created last minute and do not express the student’s style and project outcome. The appearance doesn’t capture the accurate measurements and understanding of a professional business card. It doesn’t give a high quality standard finish and an equal production of business cards. It doesn’t express creativity and a less effective standard of business card compared to others. The inaccurate measurements, style and outcome makes the overall piece less engaging and gives the impression that they have been produced in a short amount of time. It doesn’t express development and understanding through the project and business card development.

This business card is a less effective outcome as it has been spray mounted onto card and placed inaccurately within the surface causing the layout to be measured negatively. It has not been measured accurately and caused the problem of being produced incorrectly. As both pieces have been placed together and contrast this emphasises the incorrect measurements on display.  The information doesn’t provide much information and contact details with a description of the career pathway. The image on display is not the student’s work which makes the outcome less professional and not personal. This makes the outcome less appealing towards the clients and doesn’t present the information around the student’s style of work.

This is a mixed media business card that explores a professional approach towards the style of artwork of the student. It incorporates individual materials combined together in layers which works together but also stands out as individuals. The piece emphasises the different textures of materials including pencil and paint through the computer design outcome. The design provides the accurate measurement of a standard business card and combines both aspects of creativity and outlines well. The piece has a strong harmonious of colour on display with a simple background to allow the foreground to become more appealing towards the audience. The balance of social media and contact details are maintained throughout and give the client the opportunity to explore the works in further detail. It gives a small insight towards the works and make the audience curious to explore and research further into the chosen style and designs. What I like about the design is also that she includes a quote which hasn’t been demonstrated before and give a unique style and sense of striking elements. The layout of the business card has been produced and manufactured professionally with a sense of unique style with different fonts and colour schemes used. Overall this is an inspirational, professional business card to analyse as the balance of creativity and information has been demonstrated well with a unique style and personality.

This is a Textiles Designer business card which explores a variety of elements displaying a studio space. The piece is unique as it has created surface and 3D forms within the design of a handmade flower placed at the corner of the structure. The business card is effective as a strong balance between imagery and information was demonstrated well which blended together to create an effective outcome. The studio space imagery suggests and organised and detailed studio space with understanding of lots of materials and processes. The 3D flower pattern was interesting to observe as it gives the sense of unique touches and completion towards the design. But as a business card perspective it is less effective as it cannot be slotted into wallets and pockets effectively. But overall the piece is inspiring as these simple colours, font and display has allowed the design to be captured well which has been fulfilled with imagery and creative Textiles pieces. I like the individual style and intricate pieces displayed and I believe that this will be incorporated and adapted towards my work and style.

This is a professional artist’s business card taken from an exhibition which explores the works of print and lino-cuts. The layout of the design is influential and inspirational as the artist displays a large scale imagery piece of her best works showing her development of the traditional technique and outcome. It give an insight towards the style of the artist’s work and allows the audience to evaluate the high quality of work she has produced. She also, uses a display of one her works to allow the audience to visit her website to gain further information and detail around her works.  On the back of the business card displays depth contact details and information around her works and selling them within galleries. The colour scheme is maintained and follows the harmonious colour taken from the original piece. Also, the piece maintains a repeated pattern and display of colour which makes the business card have a strong theme and subject matter.

This business card explores the aspect of Textiles Design and Surface pattern through a student’s perspective. From observing the piece is it difficult to analyse as the lettering doesn’t stand out effectively causing the information to blend through the background. No engaging foreground is displayed and the information is not presented well which will make it difficult to contact the artist for further information. The piece includes images of the designer’s work which makes it personal but the outcomes don’t stand out within the piece effectively. As only one element of contact detail is demonstrated and doesn’t give enough information away to capture the students work and what she creates. Overall, the business card is displayed as a chaotic piece and doesn’t capture individual works and details about the art student.
