Grayson Perry All Man Summary & 9th March Grayson Perry Tapestry Study

Grayson Perry All Man is a documentary series exploring the aspects of a man’s role within society where the artist creates pieces of artwork with researched achieved. The documentary was broadcasted on channel 4 and received positive feedback and allowed the audience to understand how a men’s role in society can differ and be presented in different ways. For my research I specifically watched an episode called “Hard Man” which explores the aspects of men in a working class and industrial society. The episode was set in the North East of England and highlights the community and the death of the industrial society. This episode has contributed significantly towards the project as it was a main influence and inspiration because I previously watched the program and I found the outcome of the episode incredible. Perry creates a piece called “Death Of The Working Class Hero” and it was a large scale tapestry piece which highlights the importance of local industry, community spirit and workers union. This particular piece was the main reason I wanted to explore the aspects of “Industry” because Grayson Perry highlighted the importance and meaning of working class society and I wanted to reinforce this subject because I am proud of my local industry and the routes of family history. The piece captures the respect and understanding of community spirit and I wanted to reinforce and develop this topic further into my project. Within my workshop task I have studied the specific piece of the “Death of the Working Class Hero” and developed it into my own style and understanding of the work. The documentary has been useful as it has allowed me to see another artist’s perspective of the chosen subject and how he has developed understanding, emotion and respect to create the detailed tapestry artwork. Also, t has allowed me to gain research around different communities surrounded by spirit and the closure of industry and loss of jobs. It has allowed me to understand the roles of men in an industrial society and the role they have already been given when growing up into man hood. A contrasting perspective has allowed me to understand the innocence and emotion surrounded by men which is not spoken and displayed through the typical male figure and captions to “suck up emotion” and “boys don’t cry”. By re-watching the documentary it has contributed to my project significantly and inspired me at the start of the project and development through artist’s research and critical studies. Also by watching the program it has allowed me understand. This has contributed towards my research analysis and the study of Grayson Perry which has been influential and significant when progressing towards the project of “local industry”. It has also allowed me to observe Perry’s tapestry works through a Textiles Perspective and how they symbolise a community and uniting together in difficult and historical times.

Grayson Perry and Cage Fighters
Throughout the documentary Grayson Perry looks at the aspects of being a working class and “hard man” in a stereotypical role that is placed within society. The role of masculinity is an important subject maintained throughout the program and the artist visits the sporting world of Cage Fighting. The first impression of cage fighting is tough, strong men fighting for leisure which symbolises historical context and relates back to gladiators and the Roman Empire. Grayson Perry wanted to change this aspect and display a sense of innocence through the struggle to achieve and weight loss. The men interviewed discussed the issue of how men in society cannot open to others and show weakness. The sense of vulnerability of fighting contrasts with the aspect of men how can’t show defeat and express sadness.

As Grayson Perry visited Durham in the North Of England, he studied a march exploring the unity of unions who were displaying justice in the past, present and future. Men who Perry spoke to described the northern divide and how they have to defend themselves to show respect and power. They have been raised to fight in the community which can display the sense of protection and the justice they faced through the Miners’ Strike. Strong message was displayed from the aspect of the program which was described as the “fight to protect” and “fight to serve”. The former pit village was described as a hard community which has suffered in the past and the march displayed was to emphasise the importance of protecting and progressing towards the future. The fractured community uses marches to reinforce themselves and symbolise the heritage and history they had. Through the miners’ strike, men took their lives when the battle was lost and they couldn’t talk about it within the working class society. Hard man are described as soft inside with hard skin through Grayson Perry’s perspective. The strong sense of pride was demonstrated In the program with a working class band and a series of tapestries. Grayson Perry overcame the prejudice fears of working class men with pints through the aspect of his family and being from a working class background. The conclusion of the piece was to emphasise that the role of men in the community us to protect themselves in industry. As the tapestries were blessed within the cathedral the audience achieve a sense of sadness and loss of a destroyed community. The strong feeling of community spirit placed Grayson Perry under pressure to deliver artwork with a strong sense of meaning and respect. As an artist and audience perspective, artwork has never been seen as centre stage of a church but also blessed through religion.

Grayson Perry explores the topic of male suicide which was a moving subject which upset me when watching the program. 80% of suicide in the North East are men and Perry wanted to research into this to find out from families in the community. Men in the program described themselves as outsiders and isolated from expressing feelings. It is difficult to talk about feelings in groups the men and within society as they are not encourage to show how they are feeling when Perry spoke to them in the community. Tattoos were highlighted to symbolise respect and memory for others which displayed a sense of peace.

Within the documentary, Perry emphasised that tattoos and skin was a cover up to hide feelings that are locked up. Children in every generation are told to hold emotions as you never see “men cry”. The sense of cage fighting in the community is used to cover up feelings and emotions felt. The fight between “Man vs Man” relates back to historical context of Romans fighting as gladiators. A role of men standing out in the crowd in a tribe is reinforced in modern society in the community for protection and justice. A cage fighter in the program gave a different perspective and said “it’s healthy to express themselves and men shouldn’t bottle up emotions they feel”. This was a moving aspect for Grayson Perry but also the audience as it is taken from a masculine man in the fighting society.

The banner displayed is personal artwork celebrating the research achieved from the documentary. It includes the mining community and two figures who are protecting to serve and survive. Grayson Perry emphasises innocence through a figure of a child which connects to everyone and the subject of “men don’t cry”. The “Death of the Working Class Hero” highlights the strength of the community spirit facing difficult times and how to overcome them. The piece is positive looking towards the future but also respecting society and communities which have faced death and loss of lives. The contrasting display of strength and weakness is highlighted through the work with the conclusion “Time to change the new role and let go of the past”.

Also on Thursday 9th March, I continued to develop a second critical study exploring the aspects of Grayson Perry’s Tapestry works through researching into pieces exploring social class, society, division and the role of men. I particularly researched into the works of the blanket analysed and gain in Grayson Perry’s documentary called “Hard Man” in which he created a banner that displayed a working class society and how men are presented in the community named “Death of the Working Class Hero”. This piece was very influential and was included within the task as it was a main aspect of inspiration towards my development the project and proposal. It has also been inspiring when watching the documentary to analyse another artist’s interpretation of the project and areas in which he has gained inspiration from to create the outcome. It has allowed me to gain further knowledge and understanding of how tapestry works are displayed in the community and how they are significant through the community with the sense of pride, spirit and reassurance. Within the study I also researched into other banners and Textiles pieces of Perry’s work to observe and understand further topics he has explored which specifically included researching into aspects of society and the class divide. Grayson Perry continues to create the artwork as understandable towards the audience and also not to demonstrate negative views within society. I wanted to capture this aspect of his work into my critical study through the choice of media and experimentation with Textiles pieces and collage. The task has allowed me to experiment with a variety of materials through fine art and textiles to gain confidence with techniques previously used to adapt style and the appearance of Grayson Perry’s work. Also, the task has allowed me to use research, analysis and evaluation to solve solutions within the studio and Textiles workshop. The task has allowed me to solve practical and technical problems within the working studio. Finally, the task has allowed me to use practical skills and methods to adapt to the style of the chosen artist through experimenting with collage, fine art materials and textiles. Previously, I created an outline of two characters taken from the piece “Death Of The Working Class Hero” which incorporated ink and Gouache to capture the striking studies. To complete the section of the design I decided to include an embroidered border with black fabric with the words “Time To Fight” and “Time To Change”. I wanted to make these pieces engaging through the surface of the design because these words were reinforced within the documentary and symbolised hope and reassurance within the community. The task allowed me to experiment with free hand sewing with lettering and it gave me the confidence to develop this element further into the critical study. A problem I faced with the outcome was that it was damaging easily with the cut out of the design being broken from the use of incorrect scissors. This had an impact on the design and to solve the problem next time I will use fabric scissors to capture the piece. Next, I focused with other Grayson Perry tapestry works which included “The Adoration of the Cage Fighters” and “Middle Class”. These pieces look into the aspects of social divide in society through class, wealth and geographical. The pieces are influential towards my project as they research into the subjects of political and social justice which is a topic identified within the project. I wanted to create a Textiles piece for these studies but struggled with creating an idea for them. To problem solve, I gained a variety of recycled materials realting to colour scheme and the outlines of the piece and collaged them onto the surface of the design. This problem solving allowed me to achieve an effective outcome on the surface to highlight my understanding and development of the artwork. I also incorporated further Textiles methods and embroided lettering onto the surface of the design to capture the words of justice identified on the “Middle Class Tapestry”. Once this area was completed I decided to create studies around the works of “The Adoration of the Cage Fighters”. At first I struggled to capture this piece as Perry uses pastel and light colour tones to create them on the surface of the design. To solve the problem, I decided experiment with fine art equipment and used watercolours as they gain a pastel and light background finish onto the surface of the design. Also, this material allowed me to work onto the surface and create further tones and textures with the choice of coloured pencils and paint to complete the design. The development is presented below.

Due to me leaving earlier within the workshop, I was unable to complete the page but within my independently study I completed the sheet and it demonstrated below. Next, I am going to create another artist study exploring the Justice works and campaign posters of Peter Kennard.

8th March Batik and Development of Grayson Perry

On Wednesday 8th of March, I progressed and developed solutions to create my final outlook of Grayson Perry’s ceramic pieces and create my second study around his tapestry and textiles works. I focused with two aspects of Grayson Perry’s work as both elements express the subject of “Justice” effectively and emphasises my topic of the project well. I specifically wanted to obtain research around the works of Grayson Perry’s tapestry works because I have previous knowledge and understanding around his work as he explored specifically into the roles of men within the working class society. This documentary was called “All Man” and I was influenced by this program whilst generating my subject matter and project proposal for the topic. A specific piece in the program was most significant and inspirational to me which was a large scale tapestry piece exploring the working class society and the role of men within the community. The layout was displayed as a workers union tapestry which reinforces previous research obtained and I wanted to include this study within my work. The piece also united the community and how the closure and death of the mining society and lives impacted the union. I wanted to capture this piece specifically as it highlights and connects to the community and audience well. Also whilst generating this sample, I also created other studies through his tapestry works which express society and topics including class divide, identity, gender, social status and religion. He continues to reinforce the idea and deal with the subjects in an accessible but also not patronising way. Within the workshop task I also completed my first critical study sheet and incorporated Textiles into the sheet which explored and experimented with the technique “Batik”. The task has allowed me to experiment with a variety of materials and gain confidence with techniques previously to adapt style and outlines to Grayson Perry’s work. Also, the task has allowed me to work independently within the Textiles studio to problem solve and adapt to different colours and materials to suit the style of Perry’s work. The workshop outcome has allowed me to use research, analysis and evaluation to solve solutions within the studio and Textiles workshop. Also, the task has allowed me to solve practical, theoretical and technical problems within the Textiles studio. Finally, the task has allowed me to use practical skills and methods to adapt to the style of the chosen artist.

To start the task I went to the Textiles studio to create some Batik samples for my first artist sheet. I decided to explore this technique as the outlook creates texture and emphasises outlines which are highlighted on Perry’s pieces. Also this technique was explored because it has allowed me to create colour experiment mixing them to suit the scheme displayed within Perrys work. Throughout the task, Health and Safety instructions were followed to avoid the risk of injury. Firstly, hands were placed away from the hot wax baths to avoid burning when in contact with skin. Also, gloves were worn when completing the task to avoid the risk of injury. When placing wax onto paper the hand was also placed away from the substance and placed back into the wax when completed. Newsprint was placed onto the surface to avoid damage and spillage onto the floor. Apron and hair was tied back through being in the workshop. Once the process was completed the tools were taken out of the wax and cleaned to be used next time safely. All the health and safety instructions were maintained throughout the task. To create accurate samples of Grayson Perrys work, I used a pencil to draw the outline of the pieces for me to follow with the tool. However a problem I faced with the prpcess was that the wax presented the outline underneath causing damage the appereance of the design. To solve the problem next time I will draw free-hand to create samples and outcomes. Another problem I faced when using the Batik tool was that it caused spillages easily which had a large impact within the design and damaging the outlook of the pieces. However as I developed confidence with using the tool I discovered an accurate angle which allowed me to create the effective outlines and texture. I was pleased with this developed skill as it has allowed me to problem solve within the technique. Next, I placed brusho dyes onto the surface of the designs which allowed me to experiment with shadows tones and colours within the layout. A problem I faced was that the colours emphasised the damaged areas well which increased the less effective outcome of the design. As my skill developed through sampling the outcomes were more effective and highlighted the outcomes of Grayson Perry’s pieces well. The pieces I created explored a particular Grayson Perry piece which is a ceramic scene of a car crash event with damaged peoples and sadly drawings of people injured. At first I found it difficult to explore this subject but as I worked into the drawings It allowed me to understand the artist further and the meanings and subjects around his work. Once the pieces were dried, I placed them under the heat press with newsprint covering to remove excess wax and outlines to reveal a silhouette outline of the drawn wax. Newsprint was used to avoid burning the paper and materials used. Once the pieces were created they were placed onto my visual sheet to complete the design. The outcome of the piece was demonstrated below and I was pleased with the outcome as it emphasises my understanding of the artist but also my confidence through a choice of mixed media.

Next I focused onto my second study which explores the works of Grayson Perry’s tapestry works and reflecting the subject of society. The artist specifically created a collection exploring the society of Britain which was described as a “comfort blanket” and elements within these pieces that explore social divide, class and wealth. Within the study I incorporated the tapestry created in the previous documentary I described known as “All Man”. This particular piece follows the working class society, closure of pits and how men are raising money to support communities and families. To start and develop this study I created a free hand ink drawing exploring two significant figures through the piece including a mine worker and wrestler. This material worked well as it allowed me to incorporate the illustration appearance and small intricate details demonstrated. Next I created the background which was a series of strips expressing the colour red and yellow. These colours are displayed throughout my project and demonstrated understanding of the miners’ strike. Also I believe that the colour scheme also influenced Perry’s work as it is striking through the Union Tapestry and is highlighted through other tapestry works. Gouache was used to capture the colours and it gave a clean and fresh finish to the surface of the design highlighting characters and expression. I was pleased with the choice of material used as it allowed me to emphasise my understanding of the colour scheme and experiment with capturing the outline of the design characters on display. The outcome of the piece is displayed below.

Next I am going to complete my second study sheet as I was unable to achieve it due to time spent through the Textiles workshop.

7th March Grayson Perry & Keith Haring Development

On Tuesday 7th March, I started to generate critical Artist studies around the works of Grayson Perry’s Tapestry works and ceramic pieces. The artist explores the aspects of society, humans, identity, gender, sexuality, social status and religion. He deals with these subjects through the way that is accessible and yet not patronising through the choice of colour and illustration. His work from a faraway perspective can be seen as intricate patterns and colourful details but as you look closer into his works it is seen as powerful and includes dark and striking meanings. The artist emphasis current subjects and I have discovered the artist previously through a documentary exploring the diverse male role and specifically working class society. This documentary was inspiring and influential towards my development of the topic as the start of the project as Perry researched into working class men and the role they have to support the local community and society. Also, the artists researches into the communities of coal-mining and creates a large scale tapestry at the end of the problem which I felt was incredible and influential towards the project and topic in which I have developed. Perry captures current topics and subjects in society and expresses anger and sadness he has felt whilst creating them. This has been inspiring towards my subject of “Justice” as Grayson Perry expresses his emotion through his works and hit current topics which society can relate to and understand easily. Through his style of work he can capture and engage the audience through a different technique which gives his artwork identity and style. Also, Perry captures the traditional Textiles techniques well and explores pieces which are tapestry and influential towards my project as I have previously researched them through the project. To capture Perry’s work, I decided to create two sheet studies exploring ceramics and Textiles Separately. This allowed me to understand Grayson’s work through both choice of materials and perspectives displayed in his works. In the workshop task I focused creating Grayson Perry Ceramics works and identifying striking areas which I have captured from a book I gained through my project proposal and bibliography. The task has allowed me to use research, analysis and evaluation to develop solutions towards my study. Also, the task has allowed me to solve practical, theoretical and technical problems the project. Finally, the task has given me confidence to adapt knowledge to create studies and generate a variety of material used to complete the task.

To start the task, I started to build up a collage at the centre of the piece and use a selection of recycled materials to capture the tones and shadows gained from the brown colours on the study. A watercolour wash was applied to the surface of the design to allow me to place a striking, powerful message that Grayson displays on the ceramic piece. The message is a monologue expressing a childhood perspective and talking about a dead pup which is seen as a shocking message towards the audience. I found the message striking and emphasises Perry’s work effectively so I wanted to place this outlook at the centre of the design. A problem I faced was that I was unsure how to create the font as I wanted to create a messy but also symmetrical font through the same size and style which is similar to the piece on display. To solve the problem, I placed stamps onto the surface of the design using black ink which was inspiring and effective as it complimented the background well but also was striking within the piece. I was pleased with this outcome as it allowed me to emphasise Perry’s style effectively and gain the audience’s attention within the study. Next, I decided to cooperate textiles into the work which relates back to the other choice of material used through his artwork. I developed embroidery pieces exploring countries displayed through the chosen ceramic piece. As these countries are known in the media as war zones, Perry has changed the perspective and used floral and peaceful colours to capture them. To adapt this into my study, I used recycled floral material and calico to spell out the names and running-stitch used. I was pleased with this outcome as the letters worked well within the surface of the design and allowed me to spell out the letters free-hand through embroidery. The chosen material worked well and I was pleased with the overall appearance of the design and outcome. To finish the study of this ceramic piece, I used ink to capture the silhouettes of guns and fire within the surface of the design which captures the contrasting colours of the peaceful tones used. Within Grayson Perry’s work, a sense of striking marble colours were on display which was an element that I wanted to explore and place within the sheet. A problem I faced was that I was unsure what choice of material to use as watercolours would fade easily and acrylic paint wouldn’t blend effectively. To solve the problem, I decided to use the combination of Ink and brusho which gave the spiral effect and outcome I aimed to achieve. The complimentary colours worked well within the surface and I was pleased with my problem solving. Outcome of the piece is demonstrated below.

Next, I am going to include further studies within the sheet to complete the outcome and develop my second study of Perry’s work exploring the aspect of his Textiles work.

Within the studio practice I developed the background layer exploring the works of Keith Haring. Through my independent study, I generated lino-prints and samples of the works I have previously created through the choice of colours including red and black. As the pieces were still drying, I decided to create the background layer for the critical study. To create his work, I used a simple background layer of wallpaper which included cartoon hearts which symbolised his style and graffiti across New York. The background was simple as I wanted to capture the lino-prints within the foreground of the design. Next, I placed a postcard which I gained from my visit to MoMA gallery which identified my primary research and understanding of his works. Then, I placed the prints onto the surface of the design with coloured card to highlight where the pieces are going to be placed to create a collage effect. The outcome is presented below and I am going to develop this further and incorporate further samples and gouache studies of the cartoon figures and messages displayed.

Initial Outlook of Critical Study

Sunday, 12 March 2017

On Thursday 2nd of March I continued to develop my research boards further through looking at the aspect of "global industry" and "justice” through my visit to New York City. The research sheets reflects the areas I found most inspiring from my visit and which will contribute towards my project and development through my sketchbook and sheet work. The research sheet continued to allow me to use a range of materials and the build-up of collage to create and effective outcome and result. The task allowed me to continue to identify my initial ideas and research undertaken through my primary research. It emphasises the areas which are going to inspire me through my development of the theme the most and the variety of resources I have taken. Also within the workshop, I started to generate critical studies through my artist research of Keith Haring who creates graffiti and campaigning artwork across New York City. It has allowed me to develop my confidence through the knowledge of Lino cutting and developing boards. Also, it has allowed me to reinforce the skills gained and adapt them to my artist’s style in order to complete and effective study. As I have generated Lino cuts within the workshop it has allowed me to prepare and develop them in the print studio within the next week of the studio. The task has allowed me to use research and analysis to develop solutions for the chosen project theme of "industry and justice". Also it has allowed me to specify and emphasise the area of "global industry" I find most inspiring.

To start the task I developed a collage of my primary research collected from New York and built up the piece with textured layers. As I wanted to symbolise New York through imagery, I developed an apple outline to symbolise the nickname of the city "big apple". Through this layout I incorporated industrial landscapes, buildings and attractions I find most inspiring and influential. To capture the Art Deco style and golden colour scheme I used paper surfaces to build up a textured border. I found this very effective and highlighted areas I found most inspiring. Through my research sheet, I wanted to incorporate "Justice" and this included my research taken from Donald Trump protest which contrasted with the industrial background. This was developed through my layout and created two contrasting subjects merged together within the sheet. I was pleased with the outlook as it identifies the subject matter and specific elements that contribute to this. Through my board I started to develop Statue of Liberty study through the choice of materials. For my research I continued to use a range of materials to emphasise my variety of skills. This included water colours, pencils, ink, pastels, oil pastels, gouache and acrylic paint. To create the attraction I decided to build up the piece through water colours as I felt this would capture the structure and tones well within the piece. Also, this material would allow me to capture the rust and damage within the piece through weather and aging of the material used. I was pleased with the outcome as it allowed me to gain an effective study with facial features and tones captured throughout. Next, I continued to use water-colours to capture the Freedom Tower, as the image demonstrated captured the New York sky through mirrors and glass. I felt watercolours was the most effective to capture the light tones and shades of blue within the strong structure of the building. It emphasised the buildings structure through the build-up of glass that combines together to create the incredible building. Through my research sheet, I decided to use ink and gouache to capture the “freedom of speech and expression” of graffiti across the city. These harmonious colours worked well and allowed me to make the piece engaging within the surface of the design. To improve next time, I would use a variety of ink colours to capture the piece more effectively.

Collage Layout
Final Collage Layout
Through the afternoon, I decided to prepare for my critical artist research studies through creating Lino outcomes which would be ready to use next week within the print studio. I have previous knowledge of Lino-cutting and I wanted to expand my knowledge further to capture the artist’s style. The technique was used to create a critical study as the artist creates graffiti and prints for his artwork which have been displayed across New York City. The task allowed me to develop my confidence with using the technique further to adapt to style and fonts used. Also the task allowed me to work independently in order to achieve Lino outcomes safely. Throughout the task, I followed health and safety instructions in order to avoid the risk of injury. Firstly, a board was used to avoid the cutting tool moving out of place through the direction of the cut. Also, whilst cutting, the blade was placed moving away towards the hand to avoid the risk of injury. Finally, hands were placed away from the lino-board to avoid the risk of injury and the blade moving out of place. As I developed my confidence with the technique I created effective outcomes and strong textured lines. At first, I struggled with the task as the blade moved out of direction causing damage to the outlook of the piece. However, I gained confidence and produced 3 outcomes and to improve next time I will be using the blade carefully when creating corners and letterings within pieces. Overall, I am pleased with the outcomes and they are demonstrated below.

1st March Research Board Around Coal Mining

On Wednesday 1st March, I started to develop research board exploring my theme and areas which inspire me towards my project "industry &a justice". The sheet reflected my initial ideas and research undertaken through my primary research and areas which are going to inspire me through my development of the theme. Also, within the workshop I generated my project proposal timetable which explores and plan what I am going to be completing each week initially.  It has allowed me to indefinitely the materials I will be using and required in order the complete the task. Also it's allowed me to identify if I will be required to use the workshop areas and my specialised environment of Textiles.  It has allowed me to plan my time efficiently and organise to work up to the deadline and achieve the highest grade I am wanting to gain.  It has allowed me to summarise Textiles materials I am going to use and techniques which will be reflected through health and safety. The workshop has allowed me to use critical and contextual perspectives to prepare for the project proposal and research sheets. Also, the task has allowed us to use analysis and evaluation to prepare and organise my project proposal. Finally the task has allowed me to use research and analysis to develop solutions for the chosen project theme of "industry and justice".

To start the task I continued to generate my final draft project proposal through my timetable which includes areas I am going to complete each weeks and equipment I will be using. I find these timetables useful as it gives me the confidence to plan my time efficiently and work to a deadline accurately. It allows me to identify equipment I will be needing and how I am going to obtain this. Also, the timetable allowed me to demonstrate my understanding of evaluation through highlighting areas I will be completing tutorials, self-assessments and peer assessments. Once I completed the outcome I focused on my research sheet which explores my inspiration towards the project. I decided to focus the board around my inspiration of local industry and primary research obtained through my visit to Barnsley museums. I wanted to include the impact of industry and justice through the strike movement and objects obtained from my primary research. To create the layout I split the board to emphasise the differences but how they are connected together. I wanted to demonstrate my understanding of the materials I can use and I used the combination of ink, Gouache, pencil, pen, coloured pencils and watercolours. The piece was built up with collage and paper surfaces to create texture. I emphasised areas I found most inspiring which includes the workers union tapestry, badges and "women supporting the miners" objects. Each material used allowed me to emphasise the striking areas through colour and line. The built up of collage identified both aspects of the project and what will inspire me towards my project.

Final Outcome

Overall I was pleased with the outlook of the piece and the combination of primary research and influences towards the project. Next I am going to generate a further research board exploring the area of "global industry" and "justice" through my research collected from New York City. This includes my visit to a protest to around the subject of Donald Trump and companies. I will also be emphasising freedom and justice through New York artwork and my visit to the MoMA gallery. Finally I will be including images collected from industrial attractions including Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Rockefeller Centre and New York highline.

28th February Project Proposal

On Tuesday 28th February, I continued to complete my final project proposal and bibliography with accurate Harvard referencing and research. The workshop allowed me to complete section 3 of my project proposal which explores on-going and final evaluation I will be generating throughout the project. Also, the workshop allowed me to continue to generate my research through books obtained at the library and gallery visits I will be exploring. It has allowed me to identify my artists research and the primary research obtained through my trip to New York City. Through the workshop, I have continued to work through my sketchbook and generate further pages through building up a variety of surface backgrounds and colour. It has allowed me to build up emphasis of my primary research taken from my visit and using a photocopier to generate engaging pages and identify areas which are most inspiring. The task has allowed us to use critical and contextual perspectives to prepare for the project proposal. Also, the task has allowed us to use analysis and evaluation to prepare and organise my project proposal.

To start the task I discovered a problem with my Harvard Referencing which was that the sources stated weren't in subject order of books, websites and videos. To solve the problem I edited the bibliography and placed them back in alphabetical order to achieve the accurate outcome. Through my Harvard referencing I included further books generated from my research to the library which explores the works of Grayson Perry and Andy Warhol. Once the bibliography was generated I continued to edit section 3 of my project which identifies my evaluation and on-going reflection. This allowed me to demonstrate my understanding of reflection and how it will contribute to my project outcomes. Through section 3 I highlighted ongoing reflection through blogs which will include photographs, videos and links. Annotation will be on-going and reflects the choice of media used, opinions and how it will contribute towards my outcome. A journal will be used to reflect my research and visits which has already been developed from my visit to New York. Analysis will be highlighted through my sampling and technical file for my specialised area of Textiles. For final reflection I will be completing a final evaluation summarising the whole project and my outcome of my final piece. I was pleased with my section 3 outcome and decided to work back into my research. I decided to explore the theme of industry through my research of Grand Central station. The attraction holds strong architecture and striking colours of wealth but continues to support industry through the transport of trains and subways. To reflect my interpretation I created a mirrored and symmetrical layout filled with collage and postcards collected from my visit. Also, I used golden paper surfaces generated to reinforce the idea of "wealth" and the theme of "Art Deco" that was demonstrated. I used a photocopier to generate the mirrored pattern and built the page within my sketchbook. The outcome is presented below.

Next I am going to complete my timetable for the project proposal as I was unable to complete it within the time given. Also, I am going to complete my sketchbook page and start to generate research sheets emphasising my theme and areas that inspire me the most.
