28th March Outcome Development And Tracings

On Tuesday 28th March, I started to develop my initial final outcome for my repeated screen print exploring the aspects and areas of "industry" and "justice" locally. The piece has been previously developed from initial ideas generated from my visual sheet exploring coal-mining which incorporated the Strike Movement, campaigning words and incorporated d research collected through the project. The task allowed me to problem solve accurately to create a final outcome to be transferred onto tracing and progressing towards screens being exposed and ready to be printed. Also, the task has given me the motivation to achieve and allow me to progress towards working within the workshop to produce a final outcome. The task made me think about chosen colour scheme and areas I am going to incorporate in order to achieve a striking but also harmonious outcome expressing my progress and development. I am aiming to produce a final repeated screen which will be experimented with a range of techniques and materials in order to achieve the highest standard and identify final outcomes. The task has allowed me to solve practical, theoretical and technical problems within the development of my final outcome and tracings. Also, the task has allowed me to plan organise and prepare for my final outcome and the development towards the Textiles studio and print outcomes. The task has allowed me to use practical methods and skills within Textiles to develop my knowledge of tracings and creating the final outcome. Finally, the task has allowed me to evaluate and reflect design skills within the project.

To start the task, I obtained my visual sheet and selected images which I wanted to incoeprate further towards the project and final outcome. For the layout, I decided to develop it further and include further emphasis of my theme “Justice” through a layout of Union Jack. This layout is iconic and relates to the unity that others faced across the UK from the Miners Strike which occurred in Wales, Yorkshire and Scotland. This emphasises the research collected of Miners uniting together to help others and how the strike impacted lives. The layout allows me to include further lettering and slogans and I decided to include further slogans used at the movement which was “Support The Miners”. This was emphasised within my sheet and captures how the Miners protested and united together through marches and events. The layout allowed me to incorporate four designs taken from my visual sheet and this was a problem I faced when developing the layout further. I decided to incorporate the “Police vs Miners” layout as it captures the conflict and tension between both sides but also relates to Orgreave event and the truth behind that event. The design incorporates the research obtained throughout the project and Orgreave was significant towards the Strike Movement. I was pleased with this layout as it incorporates illustration of characters and can be repeated easily. The design also relates back to artist research obtained to the works of Grayson Perry and Keith Haring exploring significant events and subjects. Also, the design incorporates my significant interest towards the strike movement and reinforces my theme of “Local Industry”. For the second design I decided to develop the layout “Coal Is Our Life” which incorporates a landscape of a town and the lettering previously used within the movement. The layout has been inspired by union posters and the Tapestry works of Grayson Perry. The piece captures how the event impacted everyone from local communities to large businesses. The layout has been influenced from Union tapestries which I found most inspiring from my primary research and development within my sketchbook. The colours are harmonious and relate to the previous design well. Also, for the layout I have used the textured design of “Coal Not Dole” which incorporates objects used within the Pit and badges used throughout the strike. The design captures my family history and the struggle they faced through incorporating Pit Lamps and badges. Pit ponies were also on display within the design which have been taken from my research to the Coal Mining Museum. This animal was also on display to emphasise the event which occurred at Orgeave as they were used my Police officers. I was pleased with this layout as it incorporates textures and layers and repeats a variety of designs within the surface design. Also, the design incorporates harmonious colours and complement each other when the layout is textured. The final design includes the landscape piece of industrial pieces found within the mining community. The landscape design has been influenced from my research obtained through Barnsley Museum and The National Coal Mining Museum. Also, the piece has been influenced by artist research through the works of Grayson Perry. I am pleased with this layout as it incorporates a repeated pattern that is symmetrical and can be produced easily. All of these designs will be placed onto four different sections and the St Georges flag will be placed in between the pieces. To create the layout for my tracings I had to create the layout which includes photocopying and painting the yellow St Georges Flag. The piece for the flag was created through Gouache as it is a striking colour and would allow me to create layers through using ink to capture lettering. Also, the piece would allow me to place a border around the colour yellow to allow the piece to stand out further and separate each individual designs. Once the flag layout was created I collected measurements for the designs to be placed onto each section with included 16cm by 23cm. This was the first problem I faced with the layout because the designs taken from my visual sheet were inaccurate measurements. The measurements within the board allowed me to create a border of measurements I wanted to achieve. To solve the problem I placed the designs through the photocopier and changed the enlargements to experiment with sizes which included

·         97%

·         90%

·         102%

·         110%

I struggled with enlargement of the pieces but to solve the problem I discovered one piece with the correct measurements and adjusted them to suit the sizes. Once this was created another problem I faced was that the measurements would cause damage to the design layout and appearance. The piece generated had to be transferred onto a different layout to adjust the sizes which included the final layout and outcome of St Georges Flag.  This was placed on the layout with all accurate photocopied measurements which were ready to be transferred into the Textiles Studio. The outcome is presented below.

Next I focused with my tracings which is the first process to create my repeated screen print. The layers symbolise each colour scheme I will be using and identify each areas of colour which will be captured. For my colour scheme, I am going to use four layers which will be Red, Yellow, Black and White. This colour has been developed throughout my project and taken from primary research, secondary and artist studies. The scheme works well as they are harmonious and capture each design well and specific areas. The colour scheme was particular engaging through the strike movement and I wanted to incorporate this to present to the audience an accurate understanding and development. The colour scheme has been developed through a design sheets and experimented through a colour wheel. I am pleased with the outcome and I am wanting to develop my confidence with the scheme further and layers within the design layout. For the tracings, I placed paper above the design and used anchor points for guidance and accuracy. The piece was captured through Textiles Markers and permanent Marker pen for intricate details. I discovered that permanent marker pieces were less effective and allowed light to pass through. To solve the problem, I placed the layout onto a light box and layered the permanent marker pen. The outcome of the first layer is presented below.

Next I am going to continue to create my tracings which will be taken to the Textiles Studio to be exposed.

Two Tribes Production

On Thursday 23rd of March I visited a production called “Two Tribes” which explored the aspects of the Strike Movement around Barnsley and how it affected the lives of the community. The play explored different views, opinions and situations which made you question as an audience life around the movement and how it impacted lives through the perspective as a striker and workers who were known as “Scabs”. The play was written and directed by the cast which was interesting to observe as a viewer to analyse the research obtained and how they adapted it to fit the roles and characters displayed. I was inspired by the research they obtained through the Q&A at the end of the performance and it reinforced the primary research I have been generating for my project. The cast was powerful and moved the audience thoroughly as the director mentioned previously that others have cried through watching the play and describing it as their life personally. One actor in particular stood out within the cast who played a major role as a Striker and mentioned that his role was taken from personal research from his family which made the audience connect to the character well. Also, this particular character discussed the events well within the play and including political views and how it impacted friendship throughout the community. The set display was inspiring as it demonstrated the working class society and how communities are connected together through working men’s club and pubs. This also reinforced how society and community was effected by the Strike as the economy was falling which lead to the closure of local businesses and social clubs. Also on display was screens which gained a timeline of events which was interesting to observe the conflicting views between the Governments and describing the NUM as the “enemy within”. This was emphasised by the director at the end of the show that “The Government set the miners up” and it also “Divided The Community” which was highlighted and had a major influence throughout the performance. The outline of the play was two sided following two friends who have been divided by the strike being described as a “picket” and “scab”. Through the character of the “scab” he was excluded through society and was given threats by fellow friends and family of the community which cannot be forgiven up till the present day. I was interested to follow this study as I have previous knowledge from my Grandma of people within the community who are still excluded and hated for going back to working in the mine during the strike. The sense of regret was highlighted towards the end of the play as the loss of the mines were told and unemployment rose through the community. The views and contribution of women through the strike was emphasised through the play which was fantastic to study as they discussed soup kitchens, helping each other and marches across Barnsley. It made me proud as coming from a working class background to see the support within the community and it also described my Grandmas personal experience. The leadership of Scargill was emphasised perfectly through the play as a speech was spoken on the bridge of the theatre which highlighted the strong, powerful message spoken from the NUM leader. Also, iconic signs and slogans were displayed within the theatre which I have previous knowledge of which continued to emphasise a strong powerful message within the community. The handmade signs gave the impression of the local community working together united. A conflicting impression was acted within the play which explored the police officers who were strong figures within the movement. Strong threats and violence’s were presented which relates back to the current topic of Orgreave and how the officers treated the miners at this event. This event was adapted and changed into an expressive performance and dance which was interesting to see and interpretation of the topic. 3,000 NUM members were arrested and the union supported miners through paying for fines and arrests. This sense of unity was demonstrated within the play as miners and families joined together to help each other. Once a miner went back to work within the strike you were described as a “Scab” which made the character within the play “isolated within the community”. The sense of struggle made you think about what families dealt with but also considering the decision to be isolated by the community but also earning a living. Through my perspective I was standing with the strikers and families who united together to help each other. Towards the end of the play the character gained a sense of guilt with quotes including “I regret going back to the mine” and also how a friendship was broken between families and friends. Overall the “Two Tribes” explores the impact of the Miners’ Strike within society but also personally through friendship and families united together but also tearing apart through political views and opinions. I was impressed and obtained further research and knowledge of the Strike Movement which will contribute towards my project. I was pleased gaining information around the actor’s research and this will be included through my research process. I would recommend the play to all generations but specifically within the Barnsley community who experienced the strike and the impact within society.

23rd March Visual Sheet Development

On Thursday 23rd March, I continued to generate further initial surface design outcomes through the development of my second visual sheet. The sheet continues to follow and develop my interpretation of local industry and coal mining which incorporates “Justice” and Miners’ Strike. Through the workshop, I developed a repeated surface design exploring the elements of the Miners’ Strike and elements that contributed to the movement which includes slogans, badges and features that symbolise mining. Also, within the workshop I continued to generate my knitting sample which explores a colour scheme of grey that has been developed from my research generated. The sample has allowed me to gain confidence with hand knitting as I have previous knowledge of the technique with guidance. I have worked independently and gained the skill of knitting with a new width of needle to allow me to experiment with texture and length of wool. The colour scheme symbolise the metallic colour obtained from buildings, interior design and machinery throughout my project. The task has allowed me to develop research, analysis and evaluation for my chosen subject of "industry" and "justice" to complete a visual sheet exploring coal-mining. Also, the workshop allowed me to plan, organise and produce initial surface designs and outcomes towards my final development of the project. Finally, the workshop allowed me to solve practical, theoretical and technical problems within the process of designing my visual sheet.

To start the visual sheet layout, I obtained a compass to measure out equal measurements to create my badge layout. I wanted to incorporate badges within a design as they had a major impact within the movement to demonstrate support through the community. To relate it to the movement I continued to use the slogan “Coal Not Dole” as it was an iconic symbol of the strike and it was an engaging piece for others to observe. A problem I faced with the slogan was that I struggled at first with transferring the slogan accurately onto the surface of the design. To solve the problem I went to the photocopier and transferred the primary research onto the machine to be reduced in size in order for the font to be traced and transferred. As the font was captured I transferred the design onto the layout and repeated the design which achieved an effective outcome. Previously, I have discovered that layers of Gouache cause erosion and damage to the layout. To solve the problem, I placed pen above the gouache the capture the font and make the piece engaging for the slogan. Once I completed the badges I decided to create a textured layered piece that captured elements of the strike and items of mining. This allowed me to incorporate the element of design which was texture to create and effective outcome. For the piece I decided to include drawings of horses which were an influence within the mine pulling coal and known as “pit ponies”. Also, the animal has connections to the strike movement through the event at Orgreave. I decided to use ink to capture the background of the animal as I have previous knowledge of the material working well with layers of Gouache. To capture the features I used the contrasting colour of white which emphasised the facial features accurately. Once this was completed and repeated within the piece I included more layers that included Pit Lamps. This iconic figure was obtained through my primary research and is an important object to me through my family history. The object was successful through layers and I was pleased with the outcome and I believe that the piece will be developed further into my project. Due to time management and visiting a production of a play around the miners’ strike I was unable to continue to complete my second visual sheet. The outcome is presented below.

Next I am going to complete my visual sheet exploring the aspects of the mining industry.

22nd March

On Wednesday 22 March, I continued to develop my second visual sheet through looking at the aspects of "coal-mining" through local industry and the "strike movement". The initial surface design has been influenced and inspired by the event at Orgreave which occurred around the Strike Movement which was described as a war between the miners, (workers union) and the police. This conflict was significant within the strike movement and incorporated my research through political justice and how it has impacted lives. Through my development of the work I incorporated influence from my artist research through the works of Grayson Perry, Keith Haring and Peter Kennard. Also, within the workshop task, I continued to work back into my sketchbook through generating samples of "Batik" taken from Textiles and "Screen-printing" to produce Andy Warhol samples and outcomes. The task allowed me to work back into my sketchbook to produce a variety of different samples to allow me to emphasise a diverse range of materials and surfaces used. Also, the task allowed me to work independently within the Textiles studio to produce effective samples and outcomes with the techniques I have previously used. It has allowed me to gain further confidence with the techniques used and gain skills learnt from problem-solving and over-coming them. Through my sampling of Andy Warhol I have gained the technique and skill of a new method of screen-printing which will me to adapt and develop this further into my project to produce accurate and effective samples.  The task has allowed me to plan, produce and organise initial surface designs and outcomes towards my development to the final outcome. Also, the task has allowed me to develop research, analysis and evaluation for my chosen subject to create a second Visual Sheet. Finally, the task has allowed me to solve practical, theoretical and technical problems within the Textiles workshop and studio in the process of creating samples and outcomes.

To start the task, I went to the Textiles studio to produce some Batik Samples to allow me to work back into my sketchbook and research generated. It allowed me to emphasise my knowledge of a diverse range of media and the skills I have generated from completing the course. The samples reflected primary research through the project and were incorporated back into my sketchbook to support my research.

Throughout the task I followed health and safety instructions in order to avoid the risk of injury. Hands were placed away from the batik pots and wax to avoid the risk of burning and contact with skin. Also, contact was avoiding with the tool to avoid the risk spilling hot wax onto skin and surfaces. Finally when using the iron, hands were placed away from the surface to avoid risk of burning and contact. These were maintained throughout the task and aprons and gloves were used to prevent materials and substances on skin.

Before completing the Batik sample, I drew outlines to follow to gain an accurate outcome. This included a study Brooklyn Bridge, surface design within Grand Central Station and Graffiti within the city. The Batik sample emphasises patterns and surfaces through texture and depth and I created strong lines and tones from this technique.  A problem I faced with the outlines was that the tool was less effective causing spillages and damages to the outcome of the design. To improve next time I will place less wax into the tool to avoid this problem and also create a better outcome. Once the samples were created I allowed them to dry and then I placed coloured dyes onto the surface to emphasise the lines further. I worked into this colour scheme and used tones and shadows to create sunset scenes and strong outcomes of buildings. I was pleased with the outcome of these designs and the colour scheme used. I have gained confidence with this technique and continue to use this further towards my project the outcome is presented below.

I faced a problem with my artist research and gallery visit of Andy Warhol as I was unsure how to create his work to suit the style and technique he used. I discovered that I could create a screen-print sample through a process using Stencils which is a fast process used by artists to produce a variety of samples. This allowed me to generate a critical study of his work and develop my skills in order to complete the task. I decided to create a print around Andy Warhols famous "Soup Cans" which were collected and observed from my visit to the MoMA Gallery. The process included working with stencils and photocopying his piece to gain the font and logo of his works. I used a cutting mat to achieve the font and stencil which were going to block the screen to allow the colour to go through to reveal the outcome of the layout with the font on display. Whilst cutting the font I faced problems as it was intricate and caused to break easily within the piece. However to solve the problem I connected the piece back together with tape and still maintained the accurate logo. Once I captured the piece, I placed it onto a piece of paper and placed the screen above the layout ready to be printed. To capture the bottom area of the piece, I used news print to block the area aswell. Once the set up was completed I used the same process as screen-printing and used paper printing ink to transfer onto the layout accurately. A squeegee was used to transfer the Magenta colour onto the surface which I have previous knowledge and experience of using before.  This colour was used to reinforce the critical study of Andy Warhol work. Once the screen was coated it revealed the outcome of the design which are presented below. The technique was useful as it was a fast process with accurate results. I was pleased with the outcome as it allowed me to complete further critical studies and emphasise skills I have achieved within the course. This process was repeated to produce a variety of samples and outcomes. The pieces are presented below.

Next I focused back into my visual sheet which explored the conflict between policemen and miners during the strike and specifically Orgreave. I wanted to capture this subject as it was an important area within the strike and connects to my subject of "industry" and "justice" effectively. For the layout I used a repetitive pattern of circles which has been taken from Union flags I have previously researched and which will be useful to create a repeat pattern. Once this was layout was created I worked into the design to create characters conflicting. This was developed from research during the miners’ strike and I used two contrasting characters to emphasise this movement. The drawings were illustrations and I developed the style and outlines from Grayson Perry’s work which emphasise the characters within the piece and contrast with the harmonious colours. In between the characters I placed a pit lamp to highlight a divide between two sides and this was taken from my studies of pit lamps through my research. For my colour scheme I used the colour black to symbolise the colour of coal and studies of black and white images taken from the Orgreave event. Also, the colour scheme also gives the impression of conflict. For my harmonious colours I have used red and yellow as they were presented from a variety of Strike movement campaign colours. This also made the circles in the foreground become more striking and capture the illustrations well within. I was pleased with the outcome of the design and I believe that I am going to incorporate this further through development. I believe that the design will work well with other elements combined together to create my surface outcome and it incorporates my research well. The outcome of my piece is presented below.

16th March Visual Sheet Development

On Thursday 16th March, I continued to develop initial ideas for my visual sheet for my progress of the final project of "Industry and Justice". The first board develops the research obtained through primary, secondary and artist studies which have all contributed and influenced my progress through the surface design stage. The sheet was continued to be influenced and inspired by my New York research and the development of buildings and strong structures across the city which emphasises "global industry". The workshop has allowed me to develop research, analysis and evaluation for my chosen subject of "industry" and "justice". Also, the workshop allowed me to plan, organise and produce initial surface designs and outcomes towards my final development. Finally the workshop allowed me to solve practical, theoretical and technical problems within the process of designing my visual sheet.

To start the task, I continued to work back into my first initial idea which was a landscape scenery filled with iconic industrial buildings and the colours of the American flag. Within the workshop I worked back into the design and incorporated illustration and details of the strong structures and shapes demonstrated. To emphasise the foreground I decided to keep the buildings the colour white and use the colour black to emphasise the intricate details and patterns of the buildings. I was pleased with the outcome of the buildings as I felt I captured the iconic structures and features that people know well which worked effectively within the surface of the design. However a problem I faced with the design was that it was repeated and I struggled to capture accurate patterns and surfaces on each building. To solve the problem I used a photocopier which gained an effective outcome and made the overall appearance look repeated and accurate through the surface of the design. I was pleased with this outcome which gave me inspiration and an initial idea towards my final outcome. As the design was landscape and horizontal, I believe that the outline was effective to use and I could create layers exploring all the aspects of industry to create the print. As I work into the project I am going to continue to generate and develop ideas further throughout the weeks. The outcome of the design is presented below.

Repeated Design Outcome

Layout of my Visual Sheet

Next, I focused on exploring "justice" gained through my artist research and New York City. As I visited the city a big aspect was following the "American Dream" through signs and symbols such as the Statue Of Liberty. I wanted to incorporate this topic and also include the words around the meaning. The powerful words explore freedom and equality through America which people are expressing through political changes and the protest I visited around New York. This related back to my artist influence of Grayson Perry who expresses typography within his work and highlights meaning behind the artworks. Also, this was influenced by the works of Peter Kennard and Keith Haring who also explore campaigning artwork and political topics. To build up the piece I wanted to incorporate New York further and emphasise advertisements and industry through the background. I decided to explore the advertisement of Times Square which had a big influence though the piece as it made it engaging towards the audience through the key terms.  I decided to create a neon advertisement font and used Gouache to capture the bold engaging colours. However, a problem I faced with the piece was that I couldn't achieve straight lines and curves accurately causing the overall appearance to be damaged. However, the piece captured my inspirational and initial outcome. But for next time, I am going to use a different choice of material to capture the unique lettering and "neon style". Overall I was least impressed with the outcome and I believe that I will not be developing this piece further into the project. The outcome is presented below.

Next I am going to develop my initial surface designs further and complete my first layout outcome.

15th March Visual Sheet Development

On Wednesday 15th March, I started to develop and create initial ideas for my final piece and development through visual sheets. A visual sheet is a page filled with initial surface and pattern designs which has been inspired by my research and understanding of my chosen project "industry".  For the visual sheet I was influenced by my research from New York and exploring "global industry". Also, within the studio practise I continued to work into my sketchbook through paper cutting and developing my understanding of the project. The visual sheet combines my primary, secondary and artist studies together and emphasises my influence and inspiration gained from research. The workshop has allowed me to use research, analysis and evaluation to develop for my chosen subject. This includes developing confidence through paper cutting technique to create effective outcome within my sketchbook. Also, the workshop allowed me to plan, organise and produce initial outcomes towards my final piece and development of experimentation and samples. Finally the workshop allowed me to solve practical, theoretical and technical problems within the process of designing my visual sheet. The workshop has allowed me to achieve independence and continue to develop my project and demonstrate my interpretation effectively.

To start the workshop I started to work back into my sketchbook through paper-cutting. This technique emphasises areas of my primary research which includes strong architecture and industrial cities across New York. The process has been developed previously in projects and I have gained confidence with this technique. Throughout the task I followed health and safety in order to avoid the risk of injury. Whilst cutting I used a Cutting mat to avoid the knife slipping. Also, I used a metal knife to maintain the equipment from moving out of place. Finally, I placed hands away from the knife and cut the objects moving away from my hands to avoid the risk of injury. From my primary images I worked into my photographs and emphasised the structure through cutting out specific shapes that built up the building and outcome. This gave an effective outlook and presented a 3D tone through the development of the piece within my sketchbook. I adapted my pieces further and worked into each individual photograph to create a scene within my sketchbook. Then I developed the background of my piece further and worked into the layout to create a city scene outcome. The outcome was effective and I was pleased with the development. I am going to continue to work into the page further and develop the technique further to adapt to my theme.

Landscape Design Outline

Painted Background Layout

Next I focused creating my visual sheet and developing my first initial idea. For the background, I decided to use square shapes and rectangles to develop the form and shapes of industrial buildings and structures. The first piece was a landscape and horizontal design so I wanted to place the idea across the page. To emphasise the "elements of design", I decided to use the key term "repeat" and "scale" to emphasise a landscape design with buildings. All the buildings drawn have been taken from my research to the city and use iconic buildings such as Empire State, Wall Street and Freedom Tower to emphasise "industry". I used tracing paper to create an effective, repeated, accurate pattern within the surface and gave the outline for the use of material gouache to be placed onto. For my colour scheme, I decided to use red and blue as they are contrasting colours which emphasise the strong structures within the foreground of the building. This gave an effective outline and I used a pattern of stripes to emphasise the American flag and "American Dream" topic through the industrial buildings. This is also reinforced through the colour scheme and relates to the American Flag which emphasises my research obtained through the project. I was pleased with the outcome and I am going to work into my design further within the workshop to create a final outcome of the initial idea.

14th March Peter Kennard Board

On Tuesday 14th March, I continued to generate further Artist research and studies through the works of Peter Kennard and his “Anti-Vietnam” war posters. He was described as unofficial war artist around the period of the event and explores the aspects of Nuclear Weapons, health and danger that they cause. These designs were also linked to the CND movement and were promoted to stop the war and save lives. This was an influential study as it explores the aspects of my theme “Justice” and how his artwork follows events and periods through history. This is similar to the area I am exploring and the impact of current events within New York City through the newly elected President and also connects to historical research I have gained through the “Miners Strike”. The outcome was generated through one lesson and I was pleased with the skill of time-management and how I have adapted my skills to achieve effective outcomes. Also, I have explored new materials which has allowed me to explore throughout my comfort zone and emphasise the skills of Fine Art I have achieved throughout my time at college. The task, also allowed me to generate studies of his work which will be influential towards my development of the project and including the area of “Justice directly”. The developed study also includes a variety of materials within the sheet including charcoal, charcoal pencils, ink, Gouache, collage, acrylic and shading pencils. The task has allowed me to plan, organise and produce a further artist study which contributes to initial ideas and outcomes towards the project. Also, the task allowed me to use research and analysis to develop solutions and studies towards the outcome of Peter Kennard. Finally, the task allowed me to use practical skills and methods to develop the sheet to a high standard.

To start the task, I started to build up collage within the sheet to create texture and the built up of a particular study which demonstrates a 3D appearance of a hand damaging the surface of the book. From previous knowledge, newspaper has worked well and developed texture accurately within the surface of the design so I decided to build up the layout well. Next, I focused with creating the surface of the hands through the page with continuing to use Paper and newsprint. A problem I faced was that I struggled with developing the structure free-hand causing the layout and appearance looking irregular and misplaced less accurately. To solve the problem I continued to build up the design further and I used paint to create Texture which worked well and changed the layout. To solve the problem next time, I will be drawing an outline of an object to work on top of the design to create and accurate appearance. Once the layout was created I used the combination of acrylics and ink to create the texture I aimed to achieve which worked successfully throughout the surface of the design. Red ink was also used to capture the symbol of blood through the surface of the layout well. Once the layout was created, I focused with studies of charcoal and pencil. Peter Kennard uses skulls and skeletons throughout this work to emphasise impact of life and health through the damages of war and nuclear weapons. I decided to capture these elements through charcoal as it was a material I haven’t previously used before and I felt I wanted to achieve the skill of using them. Also, the material allowed me to build up textures, tones and shadows through the study effectively. The combination of charcoal and charcoal pencils worked well as they blended together created the surface of the designs well. As I developed the skill I gained further confidence and developed the technique further through drawing free-hand which made effective outcomes of the bone structures demonstrated. Once I completed the charcoal areas I used hairspray to maintain the design effectively. Next, I focused on a particular poster which incorporates a gas mask and a globe which continues to highlight the damage towards the environment and the world if nuclear weapons are used. Firstly, I struggled to capture the piece as I was unsure with the choice of materials to capture the natural but also contrasting colours of black. To solve the problem I used arclyic paint which captured the surface well and allowed me to create further tones and shadows of colour. I was pleased with the contrasting outcome working well and I gained further confidence with the materials as it is my least favourite material to work with. To finish the design sheet I captured the bold and iconic messages and slogans which I believe will be most influential towards my project as I felt that these emphasise the meaning of his artwork and demonstrate a powerful interpretation towards the audience. This is what I am aiming to achieve through my project and I believe that Peter Kennard’s work will be influential and inspiring through the development process. Tp capture the lettering, I used Gouache which the most effective to achieve bold, smooth surfaces. Yellow was used to create the study but Peter Kennard did use oil paints through his artwork. The bold lettering contrasts with the monotone surface effectively and achieves an engaging outcome. The final layout of the design is presented below. Overall, I am pleased with the outcome of my design as it has allowed me to achieve further inspiration which will impact my project and towards my initial design process. I have enjoyed using the new material of charcoal and I am going to continue to use this material further through the project and my sketchbook.
