Glossary Terms


Time-Based Art- Time-based art refers to works of art which depend on technology and motion for its effects. Time Based art examples include video, film, audio, 35 mm slide and slide based works.

Kinetic Art- A form of art that depends on movement for its effect.

Stop frame animation- An animation technique that makes objects appear like it is moving on its own through photography and film.

Stop motion: Onion skinning- Onion Skinning is a visual tool that enables the animator to view multiple frames at the same time

Silhouette- Silhouette in animation refers to characters who are only visible as black silhouettes.

Zoetrope- Zoetrope is an animated toy that that produces the illusion of motion when it is spun at a fast pace to create a small animation piece.

Flick book animation- Flick book animation is a small book that contains a series of images of the same thing in different positions that creates the illusion of movement when the pages are turned quickly.

Time-lapse- A photography technique of taking a sequence of frames at set intervals to record changes that take place slowly over time. When the frames are shown at normal speed the action seems much faster and creates a short film.

Thaumatrope. - A toy that is made up of a disc with different pictures on the two surfaces that appear to combine into one image when the disc is rotated.

Reportage Drawing- A drawing technique that reports and captures moments in time and history. The drawings are commonly known for being quick sketches that captures detail quick.

Gif- Is a bitmap image format that are image files that are compressed together to create a short animation that is repeated.

Action Painting- A style of abstract expressionism where paint is randomly splashed, thrown, or poured on to the canvas with the use of different tools to create an effect.
